Origami

My parents-in-law received this and shared it with me.

I found instructions on the wayback machine, also known as the internet archive (which is housed in an old Christian Science church). I needed some help at the end and this video  helped me put it together.

I am not sure why some places call it a gyroscope ("a device consisting of a wheel or disk mounted so that it can spin rapidly about an axis which is itself free to alter in direction). I like the name modular spinner better.

Events of Yesteryear

If you look at the blog over the years you will see posts about license plate meets (here, here, and here). We were lucky to find one that was not far away and not cancelled.

The house had a regular backyard and an enormous yard behind that.

The fences are covered with plates

including some that are one hundred years old

and many that I had never seen before.

We got there in time for the auction, 

but mostly enjoyed browsing.

Interesting to me to see the variety of logos.

I gave into temptation and got a few plates.

One was for a birth-year run and the others were centennial celebrations. A. bought the 1920 plate and a German low-tax plate (maybe a tractor or trailer?). 

As we left we were encouraged to return next year. Stay tuned.

Mail

The other day A. received thirteen pieces of college mail.

All the mail we received today was either college or election mail.

I wonder if we will have any mail at this time next year.

Unofficial Sidewalk Markings

Shoe prints might be the most common marking.

 

Or maybe leaf prints.

Another classic.

This one on the southern edge of campus is a bit hard to
read, but I love that some alum can come back and see
that it is still there, even if the tree is gone.

Just Because

 The newest thing in my wallet is a credit card. 

I chose the image because it is related to the piece I always visit in my hometown museum. Monet created about 250 lily paintings!

The oldest thing in my wallet is one of my library cards.

I am glad I wrote this post because I learned the library is doing curbside pickup!

Local Adventure

 It was so much fun to ride close to home and find places I had never seen.

We started by delivering some postcards to a house in the north part of town and since we were in the neighborhood we cycled up to Padua Hills Theater. It is kind of nice to be going slowly uphill so one can look at all the houses and gardens.

From there we headed to the historic Lincoln Park area in Pomona. I love that so many houses have beautiful porches, but the only pictures I took were of the peacocks wandering around.

When I was looking for a route to get to our usual area I saw something on the map called Pioneers Monument 1934. 

I found a few pictures on this great public art site, including this one from the dedication. 

Their pictures are better than mine and I encourage you to check out the link.

We almost cycled right past it because it is small and on the side of the road. I wonder what this area looked like in 1934.

Also on the map were points of interest that included public art.

This eagle was not added to the stump but was carved from it. 

We found this eagle and a few other animals in Ganesha Park, but that was not our destination.

We were headed to the Soroptimist Redwood Grove, which is written about here by one of my favorite journalists.

The grove was not looking healthy, but John Mahoney had carved many of the trees, making it a nice place to visit.

From there we rode over to our regular route and headed home. How nice to have a tiny vacation close to home!
