Sixth President

 

Harriet B. Nembhard, Harvey Mudd College's new president, is a 5C alum (CMC '91), just like the new Pitzer president (Strom C. Thacker, PO '88). She has been on campus many months but the inauguration was held on February 29 and March 1. 

The investiture was scheduled to be held on Pomona's campus at Big Bridges.

Dignitaries were inside when protests began and it was considered a fire hazard to let people in through other doors since exits were blocked.

People walked or were shuttled to the Mudd campus

and watched the event as it was live streamed.

Following the ceremony we formed two lines and
applauded as President Nembhard arrived on campus. 

There were even some alums who had returned with their unicycles.

Everyone was invited to lunch but we decided
to skip the informal dance in the evening.

Hearing all the speeches filled me with hope for the future. I wish President Nembhard and Harvey Mudd College all the best.

New Name

So many blog posts! That is because it is so much nicer to write blog posts than pack and clean!

You might remember that I have written about the building where D. works, which was demolished and rebuilt.

This March D. snapped this picture after the removal of the
old name, as described by Pomona College here.

Today they were setting up the new letters.

Looks great. 
The official naming will be at the end of August.

Trees on Campus

 

Pomona College offers this image of
Stover Walk as a background for video calls.

There was significant loss from January's wind storm.

Very large holes appeared,

followed by newly planted trees.

It will be a while before there is full shade again, but it was nice to see progress.

Change on Campus

In December 2020 Claremont Graduate University shared this information.

The university has announced one of the largest gifts in its nearly 100-year history—$14 million—from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians in San Bernardino County to purchase the Huntley Bookstore building and establish an innovative, multi-disciplinary health research center serving vulnerable populations in the Inland Empire and Indian Country.

Our family has purchased computers at Huntley and whatever school supplies we needed at the last minute. Sometimes I bought non-Pomona College paraphernalia as gifts and once in a while I bought an actual book at the bookstore. College students probably use electronic textbooks or order online these days.

National Champs!

 We went to lots of men's water polo games this season,

day

and night.

After finishing first in the conference and winning the conference tournament, the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens earned a spot in the Division III tournament along with MIT, Johns Hopkins, and cross-street rivals CMS.

At the end of regulation the game was tied at 12.

Pomona Pitzer was the only team to score in overtime and
the team, coaches, and fans all celebrated in the water.

A Regular Day

Not a vacation, but a very nice day. I started with a run and then coffee with my injured running partner. I do like running alone and it wasn't until we started running together that it turns out I do like having a running partner, too.

D. rode the Tour de Foothills.

I was there to cheer him on when he came through town but it turns out I couldn't ring the bell and take his picture simultaneously so here a couple strangers just to give you the idea.

Next up was the grand opening of Pomona College's Benton Museum of Art.

There was live music and some art activities

but maybe the first Pomona event without cookies!

It was still yummy.

From there we headed across the street to the Sontag Greek Theatre to hear the Pomona College Jazz Ensemble.
