County Fair

I had not taken the bus to the L.A. Co. Fair since they stopped using the gate closest to the art gallery After poking around I found another gate and another bus stop. Someone on the bus suggested an even better stop and were wise to follow his guidance.

The new bus stop was closest to the building with the competitive table settings!

Not only was there tablescaping, but also 

competitive door decorating, 

competitive tree decorating, 

and competitive mantel decorating.

There were the typical things, 

mattresses for sale,

fried food,

and the only place I have seen candy cigarettes in the last fifty years.

Surprises included

a great little free library

and a fantastic typewriter exhibit, described here.

Then it was time to head home.

More Train Stations

Once it opens, the eastern-most station on the Metro A Line will be about ten miles closer than it is now. As all the literature says, the stations have been dedicated, but there is no opening date. Sigh.

Pomona North will have both a Metro and Metrolink station in the same place.

I have not heard what will be done with the old station building.

Less than a mile to the west is the new La Verne/Fairplex station.

I was happy to be there for the opening because I had poked around earlier and wondered about

what was hidden under the tarps.

Graduation

 

We flew to PA

and arrived in time to have A's deviled eggs at a potluck with classmates and their families.

It was our first time on campus since A's first year

We were happy to see where he lived his sophomore and senior year.

It was different for D. to be on this side of graduation.

After the ceremony we socialized before doing some packing. 

We took a scenic walk through campus

to the Haverford train station
(not to be confused with the light rail station).

It was great to walk through Philadelphia to get to the restaurant. We enjoyed tapas with A's cycling friends and dinner with A's elementary school friends.

Then it was back to Haverford, this time on light rail. Packing and cleaning was almost done

and then is was time to prepare for the start of the coast-to-coast and border-to-border cycling trip.

New Train Station

The LA Metro A Line is heading closer to the eastern edge of LA County.

We cycled to the dedication.

 

The dedication included many speeches.
Many people talked about bringing the train all the way to Ontario.

The station art was displayed.

There was enough bicycle parking and quite a bit of parking for cars, too.

Too bad the trains were just for show.
No opening date has been announced.

Old Train Station

 

I never knew about the Santa Fe Depot in
San Bernardino until I saw it on a stamp.

I decided it would be fun to ride with the toddler I care for and we were both looking forward to it. It was a bit of a rough start because our train was cancelled, 

but we enjoyed watching lots of other trains.

We eventually got on, thanks to the conductor who pulled a big piece of folding metal that became the ramp for rolling the stroller onto the train.

No one else was there so we had poking around inside.

Right through the door by the shoeshine stand is the women's waiting room.

It was a perfect place to have a snack.

The model of the depot was a big hit.

We had fun exploring outside, too.

We had some good views from the top of the bridge over the tracks.

Then it was time to go home.

Next up, a trip on the city bus.
